Thousands of fans in a swirling Madison Square Garden and still feeling like a loser, only Lady Gaga can do that. Sobbing, she confesses in the intro to this DVD that she still feels like the girl without friends in high school. Sincere feelings or false sentiment? Who knows, at least the emotion immediately pops off the screen. Not much later, Gaga starts her show and there is also a visual spectacle.
The way she combines heavy themes with fast dance steps and a flashy light show is astonishing. Without batting an eyelid, she stops a piano ballad halfway through to say that she used to be pretended to be 'too ethnic' for a major role in a play. Now she herself is the center of the play called The Monster Ball Tour. Not that the stories between the songs are so uplifting now; often they do not exceed the level of a group 8 musical. When the failing actors sing and dance fantastic a minute later, that is soon forgotten. The crowd loves it anyway. Lady Gaga is their hero, a real winner in their eyes. Although she also remains a troubled person. (JE)more
