After retiring from the music business disillusioned in the late 1970s, John Fogerty returned to the music front as reborn at the turn of the new millennium. His new albums were well received, but the performances were especially popular. After all, the swamp rock of the best Creedence songs is perfect for an exciting concert, especially when the man behind all those hits provides the vocals himself.
Still, the DVD Comin 'Down The Road, the recording of a concert in London's Royal Albert Hall, makes it clear that Fogerty with his new accompanists is unable to fully relive the magic of his old band. Especially the rhythm section is often too tight on the beat and forgets that a lot of CCR work has to have a lazy feel. Halfway through the set loses its impact if the emphasis is very much on the new, unknown work. That is more than made up for at the end when the best rockers from Fogerty's oeuvre pass in review. Because that's what the visitors clearly came for. (MS)more
