When singer and multi-instrumentalist Winwood started a solo career in 1977, he was already an 'unsung hero' of the British music world. He has been with the Spencer Davis Group since the mid-1960s, followed by Blind Faith and Traffic. He also remained a much sought-after session musician. This DVD mainly shows why he is a somewhat forgotten hero. Shy, static and somewhat charismal, the late fifties
… on stage, an attitude that contrasts with his still powerful and always soulful voice. Winwood mainly harks back to his solo oeuvre, but he starts with a lingering beautiful version of Can't Find My Way Home from his period with Blind Faith. Surprisingly, the choice for the Traffic number Dear Mr. Fantasy. The static image of Winwood and the surrounding and excellently playing quartet makes the image dull and redundant in the long run. This legend certainly deserves a more elaborate, more in-depth and tastier DVD. (MR)more
