Modern Nature named itself after the memoirs of the English film director Derek Jarman (1942-1994), which he wrote between 1989 and 1990 on the coast of Kent. When frontman Jack Cooper visited this place, he was so impressed by the mix of nature and industry that he also wanted to capture these contrasts in music. Thus How To Live has become an album that connects organic with mechanical, as it
… were. The collective does this by juxtaposing different genres, such as folk and electronica with psychedelic influences. The repeating rhythms against flowing melodies also convey the industrial versus the natural. The songs are beautifully constructed, with rich compositions in which guitar, synths, drums, cello and saxophone can be heard. (JvQ)more
