King's Mouth was originally released for Record Store Day 2019, but the fantastic story The Flaming Lips tell here also deserved a regular release. Is the band still not at the top of their curiosity cabinet? No, because King's Mouth is a concept album that is part of an exhibition by frontman . He made a huge silver head, where you as a spectator can crawl through the mouth and marvel at dialogues
… and psychedelic projections. Something for The Flaming Lips to make a 'soundtrack' to it. from acts as narrator on various songs. King's Mouth shoots from childish and disarming to bombastic and pompous, but also contains plenty of tasteful alienating effects. Such as a prompt appearing cat meow and grunting synths that make it seem as if mechanical bees are buzzing by. The psychedelic (and sometimes whimsical) universe of this idiosyncratic band appears to be still expanding. (JvQ)more
