The Nijmegen quintet Navarone is so eager to push through to the stadiums and domes. This can be heard from their impeccable and ambitious rock and post-grunge at stadium strength. Everything is right again on their fifth album Salvo: from the smooth and raw throat of singer Merijn van Haren to the heavy ripping guitars and pounding drums. The funky Reset sounds remarkably good, next to rocking
… rockers reminiscent of a Soundgarden that wants to sound like Led Zeppelin. Originality is of course not a requirement in this genre, but character is. Navarone does not have that much. It doesn't want to get dirty or dirty, even though they practically recorded Salvo live in the studio. The fact that the group participates in the RTL entertainment The Voice Of Holland, which smells like John de Mol and Martijn KrabbĂ©, does not make them particularly credible as a rock group. Thus, Navarone, in all its ambition, falls between shore and ship. (MR)more
