Mens is Wende's first album that is entirely in Dutch. Previously, Wende Snijders switched from chanson to pop music. The sensitive songs and the theater were exchanged for electropop and the stage. Thanks to Dutch, Wende op Mens returns a bit to cabaret. With her own literary texts and by writers Dimitri Verhulst and Joost Zwagerman, she appeals to the listener's resilience. This record is really
… about something. Intimate stories and major social themes alternate quickly. It is sometimes as if the singer does not read these lyrics from a sheet, but just goes out loud from association to association. Or as opinion maker Bas Heijne writes in the CD booklet: 'It is a strange mess in your head, most of it that goes on, don't understand yourself, but it is your head. ' The poignant lyrics are matched by Snijders' always impressive voice and the original music. A battery of classic analog synthesizers and other electronics, including the special one , have a lot of impact. This well thought-out piece of work will certainly not pass you by without a struggle. (JE)more
