With the album (2014) Ty Segall broke through to a wide audience. Remarkable, because Ty Segall is someone who refuses to make concessions. For example, his guitar playing is stiff with noisy effects and his voice sounds as if he just got out of bed after a night of slump. Yet the devious underground hero on Manipulator sounded more accessible than ever. "Time to throw the ass to the crib," Segall
… must have thought when recording Emotional Mugger. Instead of opting for compact, psychedelic pop songs, Segall rücksichtslos turns in the other direction. Segall's guitar lines drown in a dark pool of fuzz and wah-wah, while the scottish-and-crooked rhythms seem to be a nod to his favorite prog and jazz rock groups. The underground lover will find something tasty on this crazy record, but anyone looking for cool songs has now come to the wrong place at Ty Segall. (PdK)more
