It is a misconception that after the failure of his unfinished masterpiece Smile (1967) Beach Boy Brian Wilson never did anything again. The 'genius madman' has written a lot of great work, such as Time To Get Alone (1969) and 'Till I Die (1971) and the entire Beach Boys album Love You (1977). Even when he went solo in the late eighties, his talent continued to float in beautiful melancholic songs
… such as Love And Mercy, Lay Down Burden and Midnight's Another Day. His eleventh solo album No Pier Pressure also contains many bittersweet songs, which the seventies this time sings together with a few old Beach Boys friends and younger artists such as Nate Ruess (Fun.) And Zooey Deschanel (She & Him). A good move, because Wilson is no longer a great singer. Unfortunately, the good production on No Pier Pressure does not work out as well. It all listens easily, but at the same time makes little impression. Newcomers should listen to great solo albums That Lucky Old Sun (2007) or Brian Wilson Reimagines Gershwin (2011). (JE)more
