Although Rhiannon Giddens makes his debut as a solo artist with Tomorrow Is My Turn, she is certainly no stranger. She is part of the Carolina Chocolate Drops, a 'string band' that breathes new life into American music from the early twentieth century. In addition, Giddens took part in the project The New Basement Tapes, in which she worked with, among others, Elvis Costello and Marcus Mumford on
… unreleased work by Bob Dylan. For that project she worked with producer T Bone Burnett, who had previously been impressed by Giddens during the concert Another Day, Another Time, which was part of the film Inside Llewyn Davis. Burnett also signed for the production of Tomorrow Is My Turn, which has become a roots album in the broadest sense of the word. The extremely versatile Giddens does not turn her hand for folk, country, blues, gospel or jazz, singing songs by Dolly Parton, Nina Simone, Odetta and Patsy Cline, among others, in addition to some traditionals and a self-written track. Very tasteful, but above all beautifully done. (IV)more
