Bob Dylan cannot be denied any daring. A record full of covers, wouldn't anyone have wanted that behind him? His standards album follows a long series of striking choices. As a folk singer he caused a sensation by picking up an electric guitar in 1965. Later he astonished friend and foe with a number of radical (eighties) and an old (2009). In addition to daring, Dylan also has a lot of self-confidence,
… not to say hairless. What he says he can add to songs that have already been sung 1,000 times? He brings them back to their original state, as they were intended. Big talk, but the crooning Dylan certainly doesn't disappoint on Shadows In The Night. He never had a very agile voice, but Dylan does have good timing. And that's also an important part of Sinatra's charm. Dylan's production also hits a sensitive chord. After listening to Shadows In The Night, the pieces of the puzzle fall into place and the standards album actually sounds like a very logical idea. (JE)more
