Nightclubbing was recorded in 1981 and earned Grace Jones her coveted star status. Highly coveted indeed, because this lady did everything she could to be in the spotlight as much as possible. Partly thanks to her androgenic appearance, she eventually became the figurehead of the international gay movement. Nightclubbing was also a big step forward for producers Sly Dunbar and Robbie Shakespeare.
They had also produced Jones' previous album Warm Leatherette (1980) and had her songs hit the charts with the help of the crème de la crème of the Jamaican musician world. They expanded their traditional reggae sound into an international pop sound that became immensely popular in the mid-1980s. Their sound was suddenly in high demand and could be heard in no time on records by Joe Cocker, Gwen Guthrie, The Rolling Stones, Nona Hendryx and Herbie Hancock. Pull Up To The Bumper became a huge hit and the carefully selected covers (Walking In The Rain by Flash & The Pan, Nightclubbing by Iggy Pop, Demolition Man by The Police and Use Me by Bill Withers) were also on Jones' best-selling album.
