Thievery Corporation came into musical sight as one of the pioneers of the lounge hype. Although they came from Washington in contrast to their mostly European tastemakers, their music connected seamlessly with Kruder & Dorfmeister, and the artists of the Compost label. At the time, Thievery Corporation already belonged to the more musical upper layer of the genre. They did more than quickly
… put together a song from a collection of samples. When it was over with the lounge fun, the Thievery Corporation moved on to other types of music that came out best at a slow pace, such as reggae and relaxed world music. Meanwhile, the gentlemen have ended up in Brazil during their musical world trip. We don't have to expect uptempo dance floor bangers here either, because the subtitle of Saudade is: 'the quiet sound of the Thievery Corporation'. In practice this amounts to a beautiful bossa nova album in the style of Astrud Gilberto's best work. A beautiful soundtrack for a sweltering summer full of delicious cocktails, preferably to be consumed in a hammock. (AD)more
