Kenny Dixon Jr. is a Detroit house producer known by a variety of names. He makes his most soulful expressions under his alter ego Moodymann. The music he releases under this pseudonym jumps back and forth between soul, house, funk and jazz. On one occasion he releases songs with a minimum playing time of fifteen minutes, at other times the album resembles a pastiche of existing music, never before
… released songs and fragments of ideas. The latter is the case on this album, where all fragments are tactically placed one after the other. It goes without saying that one must come from a good family to unleash such tricks on an unsuspecting public. Moodymann has been getting away with this for years. It is not entirely clear at first hearing why this is. Of course he has built quite a reputation as one of the great house producers, but reputations are there to be broken down. Genius or charlatan? Who knows may say it, because it is not clear on Moodymann. (AD)more
