In the canon of tormented male music - walking through to and - the New York group The National emerged as an important exponent in the mid-nineties. Steered by the sonorous male suffering of singer Matt Berninger, this quintet found through albums such as (2007) and (2010) own sound. With that last album full of dark and haunted art rock, The National also broke through to a larger audience.
Successor Trouble Will Find Me opens almost sixties-ish with a raspy acoustic guitar and Berninger who sings remarkably melodic and (for his part) high-pitched. It sets the tone for an album in which the excessive anguish of previous albums is more combined with melody and a rich interpretation of classical instruments in particular. Like the cover, in which a number of works of art are shown in addition to the lyrics, The National on Trouble Will Find Me sounds more colorful and more artistic than ever. But, luckily for the fans, never free from misery. (MR)more
