Kevin Rowland seemed to have disappeared from the face of the earth. The TV show Top 2000 A Go-Go tracked him down. He still lived in Wolverhampton where he went to football on Saturdays and then had a friendly chat with local residents in a snack bar. No, he stopped making music. "No more need," he answered politely. Not a trace of the alleged dictator who maniacally pushed his group Dexy's Midnight
… Runners to the top of the charts in the 1980s. Now there is, seemingly out of nowhere, One Day I'm Going To Soar under the shortened name Dexys. Always good with eye-catching outfits, the Dexy's now dress in turd catchers and flat caps. As if they went to a workmen's party on a Saturday night in 1937. The music also evokes the romance of the 1930s, thanks to the carefully articulated vocals of 58-year-old Rowland. Yet the album offers more than that. Orchestral pop and white soul and even a piece of bossa nova will also come along. Dexys thus remains just as elusive as in their heyday. (PdK)more
