Sabrina Starke is living proof that background singers can do more than they are usually allowed to show. The Rotterdam based decided to leave the reggae band she was part of and threw herself into her solo career. And with success. She is now two Edisons further and on her third studio album, called Outside The Box. On this album Starke shows her versatility. You can also hear pop, hip-hop and jazz
… influences on this cheerful, idiosyncratic soul album. With her warm voice she manages to create a pleasant summer atmosphere that passes the listener in a curse and a sigh. Outside The Box starts with the cheerful tracks All-in Line and Backseat Driver, after which Starke pulls out all the stops on Toss Me A Dream. On this song she shows that she has a great reach and nowadays she is rightly the singer in the spotlights. Also on songs like Goldest Gold and This Time Around, which will be reviewed later, Starke pleasantly surprises. That makes Outside the box without a doubt her strongest and most versatile work to date. (BvdV)more
