Record albums while rummaging around in your garage. That's pretty much the motto of the American garage rock singer Ty Segall. In dark clubs, such as Vera in Groningen, his name has been buzzing for a while and in 2011 he also seems to have won over the alternative music press. The Netherlands mainly knows him for a successful performance at London Calling 2011, the festival for up-and-coming
… talent. Like many straightforward rockers, songs are often on the tape before they are well written or rehearsed. Segall's production is great; his website reports 23 releases since 2008. How could it be otherwise with songs under two minutes? While the American is close to a breakthrough with his album Goodbye Bread (2011), a singles collection comes out that underlines why Segall is counted on for such a great future. Averse to all the finery, he raves and shouts his way to your hips and heart. Highly recommended for fans of Jay Reatard, Jon Spencer and other musicians who like to hang out in garages. (JE)more
