In the middle of the recording process of Eat A Peach, Duane Allman, band leader and star guitarist of The Allman Brothers Band, died. With that in mind, it is all the better that Eat A Peach is such a strong album. Dickey Betts, initially primarily a rhythm guitarist, took a step forward. His daring playing characterizes this album, which musically followed the same line as the two previous albums.
The Allman Brothers Band played a unique gumbo of blues, soul, jazz and rock. Sometimes in short rounded songs, such as the strong Ain't Wastin 'Time No More, a tribute to Duane. More often the band gets lost in minute-long, mind-blowing jams like Mountain Jam which goes on for 33 (!) Minutes. Despite (or perhaps because of) Duane's death, Eat A Peach sounds enormously inspired and is considered one of the highlights in the Allmans' oeuvre forty years after its original release. As a bonus, a live recording of a concert at New York club Fillmore East has been added. This is not the album Live At Fillmore East, but recordings that were recorded six months later in the same hall. (PdK)more
