That Selah Sue's name has "been circulating for a while" is an understatement. Before this debut album came out, she played as support act for Jamie Lidell, recorded a duet with Cee-Lo Green and was seen on Lowlands and TV. That attention is justified. Selah Sue, a 21-year-old singer / songwriter from Leuven, Flanders, fearlessly zigzags between diverse musical styles. In interviews she professes
… her love for reggae, soul, dubstep and the electronic music of the Warp label. All those flavors can be heard on this album. Her voice sounds a bit pinched, but she does all kinds of things with it: crooning, scatting and rapping. Songs like This World, Raggamuffin and Please are drenched in a brooding soul or reggae atmosphere. Against that are songs like Mommy and Explanations; bare songs with only Sanne's voice and acoustic guitar. You don't often come across such musical innovators and she also lives around the corner. Selah Sue is a talent to cherish. (PdK)more
