The Finnish group Apocalyptica will always be identified with its early days, when they interpreted Metallica and other heavyweights with four cellos. And that while they have been performing their own repertoire for years with three cellos and drums. Metallica is still not far away, but the heavy cello playing of the group in turn had a major influence on gothic metal. Cellos that, by the way, can
… look like heavily distorted guitars. The Finns' seventh album is also completely filled with their own repertoire. What is striking about this is that the metal is regularly released and with the help of vocalists such as Gavin Rossdale (Bush) and Lacey (Flyleaf) a number of atmospheric and sobbing post-grunge ballads are played. But especially in the instrumental parts Apocalyptica rages on impressively, alternated with baroque interludes in which the cellos sound like themselves. Fans of accessible and melodic metal will once again benefit from it. (MR)more
