Good rock contains ceremonial and even religious (good and / or evil) elements. The American singer Jex Thoth and guitarist Dave Nuss (No-Neck Blues Band) must have also thought of this when they threw themselves on the hymns of the American sect 'the Process Church of the Final Judgment'. This worldwide communal religious community flourished in the 1960s and, with its ascetic lifestyle, attracted
… many young people who were looking for more than free love and drugs. Their worship services (the so-called Sabbath Assemblies) were accompanied by pop music. With the help of ex-members of the now defunct sect, Thoth and Nuss managed to trace some of these songs. Perform for a special disc, balancing somewhere between the occult rock of Black Sabbath's debut and the devout rock 'n' -roll from the Patti Smith Group album Easter. The latter comparison also has everything to do with Thoth's dark and passionate voice, a revelation in itself. The Process Church revered God and Jesus as well as Satan and Lucifer and that gives striking grim undertones to songs like Hymn Of Consecration and the lingering Judge Of Mankind. Ingredients for an extremely exciting, sweltering and intriguing rock record. (MR)more
