The New York formation Rudder moves on a very adventurous foot in the no man's land between jazz and rock. In the Netherlands, they can count guitarist Anton Goudsmit (The Ploctones, New Cool Collective), who is not averse to a solid tune of music, among their biggest fans. Fat grooves, ripping saxes and fierce, inventive keyboard parts make Rudder one of the most sensational jazz rock bands of the
… moment. Rudder is more than the product of the members who each come from different musical scenes, and who are jointly responsible for the uncompromising, solid sound. The raw playing of saxophonist Chris Cheek has previously been heard in the Paul Motion Electric Bebop Band and the Charlie Haden Liberation Orchestra. Keyboardist Henry Hey not only played with many jazz artists, but was also musical director on Rod Stewart's last world tour. Tim Lefebvre's funky bass work has shone on many soundtracks and Keith Carlock, recently named 'best drummer' by Modern Drummer, is from the pop world. Matorning is yet another example of a strong piece of solid raw unbridled music such as can only be made in New York. (AD)more
