Giovanca's debut Subway Silence (2008) was hugely well received by critics and audiences alike. In addition to the Silver Harp, it also earned her a 3FM Award nomination for best singer. In the meantime, the talented lady continued to make music undisturbed. With the help of almost the same employees, including producers Benny Sings and Dean Tippet, Giovanca releases the album While I'm Awake in
… the spring of 2010. As one would expect from musicians of this caliber, they have not used the same formula, but they have managed to retain their recognisability. While Subway Silence was more of a record on the road, While I'm Awake comes into its own better when it is played within four walls at night. There is a more subdued atmosphere overall and the hip hop tones seem to have disappeared. Instead, the singer flirts more with the eighties and the disco genre (Lovechild, Hungry). Giovanca, however, sounds most at home among the mellow productions (Simply Mad, Where Love Lives), which are also the strongest in their own right, in terms of beats. (GL)more
