In the mid-noughties, Balkan beats were the sweet of the week. Meanwhile, the steamy mixture of dance and gypsy music is above ground. So with top 40 hits, but also with the necessary chaff in between the choirs. Time for one of the pioneers of this bastard music to give the genre some pepper (or paprika?) Again. So Shantel, the German DJ with Romanian grandmother, who managed to get a variety of
… virtuoso gypsy musicians for his previous album . Not much has changed at first hearing. 's tumbling trumpetsin the title track fit in completely with Shantel's 'signature sound'. And that is also the flaw of this album: Planet Paprika remains in the shadow of its successful predecessor. The beats are danceable, but the songs seem to be put together continuously. The title track is a straight quote from his own hit Disko Boy. And also on the exotic planet Paprika, the cliché unfortunately applies that stagnation is decline. (PdK)more
