The American / British duo The Kills has already made two albums full of steaming garage blues, somewhere between John Lee Hooker and The Stooges. With only a dirty guitar sound and a dilapidated rhythm box as accompaniment, guitarist Jamie Hince and singer Alison Mosshart mainly know how to play out their brooding mutual chemistry, with an extremely exciting and sexy sound as a result. Midnight Boom mainly sounds poppy, with Mosshart singing a lot more melodic. Music that does well on the (alternative) dance floor and sometimes even, with its dominating rhythms, somewhat resembles the minimal R&B of the Neptunes. Sensual the duo still sounds undisputed, but this time they seem to have limited their primal drives. Midnight Boom has thus become a less striking but strong alternative pop album. (MR)more
