Guillemots was formed around British singer, keyboardist and songwriter Fyfe Dangerfield. Dangerfield is classically trained and the other band members (of various nationalities) of this quartet also earned their spurs outside of pop music. In the Netherlands, the group could already be seen at festivals such as London Calling and Motel Mozaïque, which raised expectations for this debut. On Through
… The Windowpane they create a broad and orchestral sound, with a great sense of drama as a connecting factor. The songs are often poppy and catchy, but the group constantly manages to give controversial turns with strange orchestrations and arrangements. Dangerfield's voice is very reminiscent of Jeff Buckley's at its most fragile and there are also vocal contributions from Chris Martin and Joan (As Police Woman) Wasser. But especially fans of Rufus Wainwright and Scott Walker should give Guillemots a listen. (MR)more
