The Nigerian Tony Allen (1940) became known in the 1970s as the drummer for Fela Kuti's band, Africa 70. Afrobeat was called the music they introduced, a mixture of jazz, funk and African influences. Until 1980, a huge amount of records were released that featured Tony Allen's unique funky drumming style. Mostly with Fela Kuti, but later also with his own group No Discrimination. When he moves to
… Europe, he disappears from the spotlight for several years. He works in Paris as a session musician for Manu Dibango, among others. Only in 2002 does he release his own album, entitled Homecooking. Four years later - in the meantime he still plays and tours with the Dutch New Cool Collective - Lagos follows No Shaking, a return of the master to his old love, the afrobeat. The songs were recorded during night sessions in Nigeria's capital. In eleven groovy songs Tony Allen blows the dust off the afrobeat. (MH)more
