The first maxi lessons of the Norwegian duo Butti 49, consisting of DJ Snorre Seim and multi-instrumentalist Oyvind Jakobsen, were soon picked up by the crème de la crème of future jazz DJs such as Rainer Trüby, Jazzanova and Gilles Peterson. This creative output soon led to remix assignments for heavyweights such as Kyoto Jazz Massive, Nu Spirit Helsinki and Ennio Morricone. At Habit they show
… how versatile they can move within their eclectic mix of funk, soul, broken beat, electronica and jazz. They are assisted in this by guest vocalists Emo and Mayia James, who has also provided Nathan Haines, Kyoto Jazz Massive and Mark De Clive Lowe with her services. Especially the versatility is striking. Jazz ballads are effortlessly alternated with broken beat and high-quality disco funk. As the music on Habitat progresses, Butti 49 clearly makes it possible to deal with more complicated material than dance, earning her a high place in the 'nu jazz' premier league. (AD)more
