The young singer Kevin Lyttle scored a major international hit in the summer of 2003 with the danceable Turn Me On, which cleverly combined R&B with dancehall reggae and soca. A very hit-sensitive sound, after Sean Paul broke open the market for Caribbean music earlier that year. Unlike these artists, Lyttle's emphasis is on soca, which is by far the most important music in the Caribbean, apart
… from the reggae island of Jamaica. By cleverly incorporating Western influences into his music, Lyttle does the same with soca as Sean Paul did with dancehall: making it accessible to a wider audience. Not all songs are as strong as Turn Me On, it seems that the album debut was hastily put together after the rapid success of the single. Nevertheless, Lyttle, for example on the outlier Screaming Out My Name, produces a fresh and above all summery sound. (MS)more
