Last album by the talented singer / songwriter who died of lung cancer on September 7, 2003. The disease could likely be traced back to Warren's childhood, when he could always be found in his grandfather's asbestos-lined shed. His addiction to cigarettes didn't make things any better. He recorded this album after the fatal diagnosis was made and he was very keen to make this album a fitting final
… chord of his life. To achieve this he received help from his musical friends Ry Cooder, Dwight Yoakam, Jim Keltner, David Lindley, Jackson Browne, Tom Petty, Billy Bob Thornton, Don Henley, Bruce Springsteen, Emmylou Harris and many others. A well-known song like Bob Dylan's Knockin 'On Heavens Door suddenly gets a poignant charge here. Like George Harrison a year and a half earlier, Zevon delivers one of his best albums just before his death. (MS)more
