Together with Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker was the JB's in the seventies, the wind company that provided the compositions of James Brown with the sharp edges. This alto saxophonist scored his biggest hit with Soul Power, a composition by James Brown, which he performed with his own band Maceo And The Macks. Later he joined George Clinton's Parliament / Funkadelic circus and played
… with Bootsy Collins. Funk is in heart and soul. Made By Maceo, however, is reminiscent of a grandchild sitting on grandfather's lap and his stories with a haunting 'again, grandpa! answers. The content remains the same but the enthusiasm plummets as it is repeated more often. This is also the case on this CD. Maceo's soli still splash, but the packaging is so polished and routine, that there is no longer any mention of the old fireworks that were once his trademark. (AD)more
