By contributing to albums by The Roots and Macy Gray, soul singer Cody ChesnuTT already managed to draw attention to himself. With this debut album he delivers an intriguing calling card. The production sounds quite lo-fi (Lenny Kravitz squared) but ChesnuTT nevertheless has enough pretensions to put no less than 36 songs on these two discs. He made the recordings in the period just after the deal
… with his band The Crosswalk was suddenly canceled by the record company. No longer hindered by commercial expectations, Cody set to work on his tape recorder and was inspired by all the music he loves, from rock and soul to British electropop. Anyone who can listen through the cruel recording quality will hear the first signs of life of an important new talent. (MS)more
