After the success of the fun single I'm Like A Bird, the debut album of Nelly Furtado was eagerly awaited. To Whoa, Nelly! this singer of Portuguese parents, who grew up in Canada, shows that despite her young age she has a lot to offer. She plays guitar on the song Shit On The Radio and she wrote almost all the lyrics and music. Only for the Portuguese passage in the sensitive fado song Scared Of
… You, she enlisted the help of mother Manuela. She was also responsible for the production, together with her 'discoverers' Gerald Eaton and Brian West. In her lyrics, which are often about ex-boyfriends, Nelly emerges as a self-confident woman who likes to keep the reins in her own hands. The album starts with some commercially sounding songs, including Destiny ' s Child-like Baby Girl and the aforementioned single I'm Like A Bird. Halfway through the sound becomes (luckily) more experimental and in Legend and Turn Off The Light we hear that she also likes rap, hip hop, world music and Brazilian bossa nova. As musical heroes, she mentions very different names such as Bob Marley, Beck, De La Soul, Madredeus, Portishead and Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. All these artists have in common that they have been innovative and groundbreaking. Judging from her versatile debut, Nelly Furtado could well end up in that list in the future.
