With their debut album , the French duo Daft Punk caused a musical revolution in 1997. They took techno out of the club scene and brought it into the living room thanks to catchy songs like Around The World. Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem Christo (what a name) have been allowed to work on the successor for more than four years and the expectations for Discovery were therefore high. The
… album opens with the fun single One More Time, with vocals from the American . The strong second track (Aerodynamic) has also been released as a single and is especially noticeable thanks to the distorted guitar solo played by or makes one think. It seems that the gentlemen chose the title Discovery because you can twist it to 'Very Disco' and there are indeed many influences from the 70s and 80s in the song material. The stirring Superheroes is based on a sample by (!) And Short Circuit sounds like in the . Other highlights on the album are the funky Crescendolls and the ten minute long closing track Too Long. Unfortunately, there are also many failures on Discovery: the instrumental idiots Nightvision and Voyager for example, but also the -like High Life sounds uninspired and unoriginal. Finally, the songs Digital Love and Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger irritate mainly because of the vocoder voices. All in all there is about 30 minutes of good music on Discovery and that is a bit too little for a group like Daft Punk. (MvP)more
