Outside the United States, country music mainly relies on a relatively limited group of fans, unless artists succeed in making a crossover with pop (think of Shania Twain and Faith Hill). Country singer Jesse Dayton is already referred to in America as 'alternative country', which means that connection in Europe is by definition difficult. Yet his 'turbo-country', as Dayton calls it, is very infectious
… and pleasant to listen to. With a history in a rockabilly band (The Road Kings) and as a guitarist with Waylon Jennings, Dayton succeeds in combining both more traditional country forms and rock 'n' roll into their own style. Country Soul Brother therefore does not have a polished Nashville sound, but honky tonk, blues, 'texana' and country soul and sound traditional instruments such as an accordion, trombone, violin, dobro, banjo and fender rhodes. And Dayton also knows how to give his lyrics a pleasant ironic tone, making Country Soul Brother especially a cheerful CD. (IV)more
