While she profiled herself as a poppy singer on her previous CD Around The City, Eliane Elias is back at her real thing (and with Blue Note Records) with Something To Live For. On this CD she pays tribute to her exemplary pianist Bill Evans. This was a great source of inspiration for her piano playing and this can clearly be heard in pieces such as Solar and You And The Night And The Music. Sparkling
… and swinging, Elias knows how to master the pieces of Evans, or standards associated with him. In addition, she even lets you hear two 'new' compositions by Evans, which recently appeared on a rehearsal cassette tape, recorded a few weeks before his death in 1980. On about a third of the pieces, Elias also starts to sing, whereby it becomes clear once again that she does not do this without merit, but that the level of her piano playing is much higher. Elias is in good company, as the bass is played by her husband Marc Johnson, who himself was part of the Bill Evans Trio for a number of years. (HB)more
