Jazz singer Diana Krall is releasing a CD for the first time with The Girl In The Other Room, which is not dominated by much-played 'standards'. Apart from Mose Allison's Stop This World, the repertoire of this CD mainly originates from pop music. She wrote the rest of the songs with her hubby, Elvis Costello. Songs by Tom Waits (Temptation), Joni Mitchell (Black Crow) and Elvis Costello (Almost
… Blue) are perfectly transformed into melancholy jazz masterpieces, in which the blues is constantly simmering. With the exception of Love Me Like A Man, made famous by Bonnie Raitt, the atmosphere of The Girl In The Other Room can best be brought home in a smoky bar where a lot of love suffering is drunk away. In that respect Krall's vocals can best be compared to a female Tom Waits, with a little less drink. She listened carefully to her husband in terms of timing and phrasing. The restrained accompaniment of Anthony Wilson (guitar), Neil Larsen (Hammond B3), Christian McBride (Bass) and Peter Erskine (drums), among others, only enhance this bluesy atmosphere. This version is in super audio format, the tracklist is otherwise identical to the normal version JFX3333. (AD)more
