Singer Abbey Lincoln has often been compared to Billie Holiday. More and more, however, she has set out her own lines. Her new CD "Who used to dance" shows a woman who has acquired her own sound in jazz and has also acquired her own place in it. Her compositional qualities are also of a high level. She herself wrote five of the nine songs on this CD: "Love has gone away", "Who used to dance" (with
… beautiful rhythmic tap-dance, that sounds like a musical instrument, by Savion Glover), "Love what you doin" "", "I sing a song" and "The river". A beautiful standard is "Street of dreams", her rendition of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine man" is striking. Lincoln's rhythm section consists of: Marc Cary (piano), Michael Bowie (bass) and Aaron Walker (drums / percussion). Guests on this fine vocal jazz CD include: Steve Coleman (alto saxophone), Rodney Kendrick (piano) and Frank Morgan (alto saxophone). Recommended! _more
