Since her debut in 2003, pianist Hiromi has conquered the jazz scene like a whirlwind. Especially in her native Japan, where she was born in 1979 as Hiromi Uehara, she is extremely popular and has won many awards. But also in the rest of the world she gave enthusiastically received concerts and sold many CDs. This is not surprising for someone who started piano lessons at the age of six, played with
… the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of fourteen and performed with Chick Corea at the age of seventeen. Her playing has many of the hallmarks of Corea's, including pianist Ahmad Jamal, who became something of a mentor to her when she was a student at the renowned Berklee College of Music in Boston. Hiromi has its own trio with bass guitarist Tony Gray and drummer Martin Valihora. She sometimes expands this group with (double neck) guitarist David Fiuczynski to form the band Sonicbloom. Hiromi herself says about her music: "It has some elements of classical music, it has some rock, it has some jazz, but I don't want to give it a name." If we do, then in the case of her trio it would be 'modern trio-jazz á la Chick Corea' and with Sonicbloom 'modern fusion á la Chick Corea, with a lot of howling guitar'. Both DVDs offer a good impression of live concerts of the Japanese, in which it appears that in terms of facial expressions and movements on the piano stool, she appears to have another pianist as an example, namely Keith Jarrett.
