For many jazz fans, 2018 was all about by John Coltrane. These rediscovered studio recordings were an essential addition to the mighty oeuvre of one of the most influential jazz artists of the 20th century. The 1963 collector New Directions is released barely half a year later and seems to want to take advantage of the success of Both Directions At Once. It contains all the recordings that Coltrane
… made in 1963, presented by the compilers as the year in which he developed his sound with his regular quartet. The collection therefore again contains Both Directions At Once, in addition to the conservative vocal standard record . On the live albums and can be heard that the band dared to play much more daring and experimental on stage. In particular, the endless swirling My Favorite Things from Newport is one of the best of the many versions of this Coltrane classic. 1963 New Directions recalls this, but unfortunately contains nothing new.
