The previous piano trio album by Tord Gustavsen dates back to 2007. In between, this Norwegian pianist played with various female singers and in quartet with saxophonist . With his regular drummer Jarle Vespestad, new bassist Sigurd Hole and the trusted as producer, Gustavsen is now completely in his element again. A minimal line-up gives him plenty of space for his musing and lyrical playing.
By never really breaking loose, The Other Side creates a subdued and intense tension. In addition to his own compositions, Gustavsen also arranged four compositions by . The baroque melodies of the 18th-century genius are sometimes difficult to keep in check, so that the rhythm section threatens to follow Gustavsen. But that's the only blot on this otherwise exemplary and daring European jazz album. (MR)more
