Swedish pianist Esbjörn Svensson is perhaps the best-known jazz musician of recent decades who died at a young age. The tasteful way in which he crossed the boundaries between jazz, alternative rock and pop and electronic music with his trio (EST) was ahead of his time and was not forgotten by fans and musical followers. Just like the shock that went through the jazz world when it was reported in
… 2008 that he had died in a diving accident at the age of 44. His rhythm section, (drums) and (bass), also honors Svensson's musical legacy, although Berglund is now working with his band . With the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra (conducted by ) and a slew of prominent Scandinavian jazz musicians, they have been playing orchestral versions of EST music since 2013. Broad and drawn-out, this company accentuates and enhances the musical richness and tension of the original trio repertoire. The choice of pianist in the role of Svensson was a good one. This Finn flawlessly feels the robust and lyrical playing of Svensson. A nice tribute that also makes us reach for the originals. (MR)more
