Creative workshop and record company Kytopia (an initiative of Colin Benders / Kyteman), located in Utrecht, is developing into a supplier of products that are as idiosyncratic as they are high-quality. A kind of ECM from the Low Countries. Flatlands, Kapok's debut certainly contributes to that statement. This trio consists of horn player Morris Kliphuis, electric guitarist Timon Koomen and drummer
… / percussionist Remco Menting. This unusual line-up is no obstacle for these young musicians to navigate between swinging world music and transparent chamber jazz. They are also assisted by a string quartet, among others. But it is the three band members who shine in Kliphuis' tight, melodic compositions and more loosely played group improvisations. The album was made in two weeks in Kytopia and the creative freedom that Kapok enjoyed there definitely resonates on Flatlands. (MR)more
