American jazz pianist Hank Jones continued to play and record until his death at the age of ninety-one in May 2010. He recorded this special album three months earlier with bassist Charlie Haden. Come Sunday is a tribute to the black spirituals and hymns the pair knew from their childhood. They did not opt for the exuberance of this repertoire, but instead portray traditionals such as Down By
… The Riverside and Give Me That Old Time Religion solemnly and quietly. Haden - once a noisy free jazz icon - mainly opts for a supporting role behind the fragile and transparent playing of Jones and gives a slight swing to the music. The primary and sacred melodies sometimes sound almost like lullabies but never turn into background music. This is prevented by two jazz giants who are completely evenly matched. (MR)more
