The Lucien Dubuis Trio (indeed) consists of three gentlemen who make crossover jazz led by saxophonist Lucien Dubuis. On the CD Ultime Cosmos, these Swiss collaborate with the American guitarist Marc Ribot, known for his services to Tom Waits and Elvis Costello. From the moment the album kicks off, it's clear that no one has entered into this partnership to get rid of it easily. Ribot and Dubuis
… repeatedly rival each other with their ingenious solos full of interesting, sometimes atonal melodies. As can be expected from a crossover tire, very different flavors are featured on Ultime Cosmos. For example, the title track can hardly be understood as jazz, rather like surf rock peppered with saxophone and on Space Invaders the squeaks and grunts of Dubuis are supported by a hard rock riff. Here and there we slow down, but in general Ultime Cosmos is an energetic record. Or as the Trio puts it on its MySpace: 'The Crossover Jazz Trio just enjoys playing the jazz stuff, just as Madonna would enjoy sex after a year in jail, with lust!'. The enclosed DVD shows how the successful album was recorded. (JE)more
