Although it is not yet advertised in tourist publications, Finland has a thriving jazz scene. Especially the Ricky-Tick Records releases are always worth listening to. Showpiece The Five Corners Quintet has already largely conquered the world and a large part of the label will undoubtedly follow. This certainly applies to Author Jazz, which alternates the dance floor jazz of The Five Corners Quintet
… in a moody way with the atmospheric jazz of the Cinematic Orchestra. Each piece of this band around drummer / saxophonist / flutist / pianist / percussionist Antti Hynninen carries a completely different atmosphere. Latin-inspired dance numbers (Congo Square, Two Jaguars In Warsaw), captivating vocal ballads (Kill You Alive, Tomorrow Knows), heavy rhythm & blues (Who Struck John), claustrophobic film-noir (Gris-Gris), and ominous swing to a voodoo beat (Uruguayo), everything is presented with equal conviction. In that respect, TFCQ should be very careful not to be dethroned. (AD)more
