After releasing two live CDs with his electric formation Gatecrash, trumpet player Eric Vloeimans chose to record the third in the sheltered environment of a studio. It won't matter much to the listener, because, whether they are on stage or not, Gatecrash plays with the same amount of energy. Heavensabove opens with the funky Maceo, a tribute to saxophonist Maceo Parker, with Vloeimans' trumpet
… literally screaming it out. Floratone, one of the first compositions by drummer Jasper van Hulten, slowly works to a blaring climax with the utmost effort of Vloeimans and keyboardist Jeroen van Vliet. Pelerinage literally takes a step back, because it is based on an endless pilgrimage that seems to never end. The band was so happy with the cheerfulness of Fete De La Musique that they spontaneously burst into a polonaise after recording. Gatecrash goes all out on the sturdy, raw Pedal To The Metal. For the rest, heavensabove contains pieces with a more melancholic character. (AD)more
