The New Generation Big Band is a collective of a new generation of jazz musicians, mostly recently graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Their goal is to create big band music with a contemporary flavor. All this could be heard on their debut Had Je Wat ?! (2007) although the modern flavor consisted of late 1970s jazz funk rather than current musical developments. All arrangements come
… from the pen of Robbert Scherpenisse, who seems to be inspired by the work of Johnny Pate (Shaft In Africa), among other things. Special guest is saxophonist Bob Mintzer who performs on Motet and Geraldine, both of his own Yellowjackets. Further covers come from Benjamin Herman, whose Durban Poison provides a smashing start, and from Jesse van Ruller (Circles). New Generation Big Band also lives up to the first two words of its name by including Chase The Pase and Have You Ever by singer Senna in its repertoire. New Generation Big Band has grown tremendously in a very short time: from hesitant beginner to solid unit. (AD)more
