It took nearly eight years for Brian Blade to release Perceptual (2000). In the meantime, he was a much sought-after drummer, providing saxophonists Kenny Garrett and Joshua Redman, among others, with his energetic playing. He also made an essential contribution to Wayne Shorter's (acoustic) comeback and accompanied vocalists such as Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and Norah Jones. As if all of that didn't
… happen, Blade on Season Of Changes just continues down the path he took with Perceptual. That means high-quality neo-bop with influences from folk, pop, and a good dose of light fusion a la Pat Metheny and / or Yellowjackets. In that sense it is therefore no surprise (but special) that Blade's Fellowship Band has kept the same line-up in those eight years, with guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, saxophonists Myron Walden and Melvin Butler, bassist Chris Thomas and pianist Jon Cowherd. The latter signed with Blade for the compositions and production of this album. An album that radiates a pleasant and almost spiritual focus. (HB)more
